Tips for Virtual Programming
Connecting to Zoom
- Before joining a Zoom meeting on a computer or mobile device, you can download the Zoom app at https://zoom.us/download. Otherwise, you will be prompted to download and install Zoom when you click a join link.
- A Zoom account is not required if you are strictly joining Zoom Meetings as a participant. If someone invites you to their meeting, you can join as a participant without creating an account.
- Each meeting has a unique 9, 10, or 11-digit number called a meeting ID that will be required to join a Zoom meeting. You will receive both the meeting link and the unique ID in your welcome email at least three business days prior to the first day of the program.
- To join via link:
- Click the join link in your email or calendar invitation.
- Depending on your default web browser, you may be prompted to open Zoom.
- To join via unique ID (Windows & Mac):
- Open the Zoom desktop client.
- Join a meeting using one of these methods:
- Click Join a Meeting if you want to join without signing in.
- Sign in to Zoom then click Join.
- Enter the meeting ID number and your display name.
- If you're signed in, change your name if you don't want your default name to appear.
- If you're not signed in, enter a display name.
- Select if you would like to connect audio and/or video and click Join.

Testing sessions will be available on select days to log in to a Zoom meeting and test your user setups. Days, times, links, and meeting IDs for these sessions will also be included in your welcome email. These sessions are intended to practice connecting to Zoom, test webcams and microphones, and familiarize yourself with user controls before the first day of class. If you are new to Zoom, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of these testing opportunities.
- Mute and Unmute your mic
- Start and stop your video camera
- Invite others (do not use this button, only those pre-registered can join the meeting)
- Participants list is where you can see all attending the meeting
- Share Screen to show your screen (used by presenters only)
- Chat feature
- Record the meeting (ignore)
- Leave Meeting to exit the meeting.
Zoom Viewer Settings
Use viewer settings wisely. Different settings may be best in different situations:
- Active Speaker View—Active Speaker View will switch the large video window between who is speaking.
- Gallery View—Gallery View lets you see thumbnail displays of participants, in a grid pattern, which expands and contracts as participants join and leave the meeting.
- Pin—Pin screen allows you to disable active speaker view and only view a specific speaker (for example, the instructor or program leader). To pin a video, at the top of your screen, hover over the video of the participant you want to pin and click “…”. From the menu, choose Pin Video.
Tips for a Successful Virtual Program Experience
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Please raise your hand, turn on your microphone, or use the chat to participate with any questions or comments you might have. We want to hear from you!
- We strongly encourage you to turn on your webcam to get the most out of our virtual programs! This makes it more welcoming for your instructor and classmates to interact with you and allows for your instructor to see what you are doing to correct any technique or action. To improve your appearance on camera, try to have a light source in front of you (back lighting creates a silhouette).
- If others in your home are using network services, if possible you may want to ask them stop during your program so you are not competing for bandwidth on home WiFi.
- Be respectful of your fellow participants, your instructor, and yourselves.
- Please follow any additional guidelines your instructor has for your virtual program.
