Orange County announces closings for New Year's Day

Orange County administrative offices will be closed Jan. 1 in observance of New Year's Day. Please note the following exceptions.

Curbside recycling for Wednesday, Jan. 1, will be collected on Saturday, Jan. 4. Please have your bins out by 7 a.m. 

For Animal Control emergencies, including potential rabies exposures or animal bites to humans, please call 911 to be connected to our on-call Animal Control Officer. The after-hours animal drop off (night drop) will remain open and will be checked daily.

Normal operations will resume Thursday, Jan. 2.

Orange County to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Orange County Department on Aging and NCCU Alumni Orange County Chapter invite the public to a Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Passmore Center (103 Meadowlands Drive, Hillsborough).
Join us as we celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr and all that he accomplished through his courage and nonviolent protests. He will forever be remembered.
The free program will take place at the Passmore Center from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Guests are asked to register by Friday, Jan. 10. For more information or to register, please call 919-245-2015.
The celebration features special guest speaker, Danita Mason-Hogans, who is a native of Chapel Hill and comes from seven generations of “movement people.” She has also been an education activist for more than 30 years and serves as Program Manager for the Critical Oral Histories program at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.

Registration open for PLANT Beginning Farmer Class

The 13th annual beginning farmer class, PLANT (People Learning Agriculture Now for Tomorrow), starts Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020. This class covers many production and business related topics for aspiring farmers.

Each class meets for three hours, from 6-9 p.m. at the Orange County Cooperative Extension office, located at 306-E Revere Road, Hillsborough. Each session is split into three segments taught by experienced local vegetable growers, University professors, Extension specialists or agents or other experts.

This class is part of the PLANT Beginning Farmer program run by Orange County Cooperative Extension that started in 2008. To register, please go here or look for class information on the homepage of the Orange County Cooperative Extension website. Registration deadline is Jan. 3, 2020.
