Classes and Trips

A Day at the Palace!

Journey with us to New Bern, NC to Tryon Palace! The centerpiece of the historic site was also the grandest public building in the colonies. Royal Governor William Tryon and his family brought architect John Hawks from London to design and build the Georgian-style structure. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace served as the first permanent capitol of NC and home to the Tryon family.

Surrounding the Palace are several historic homes and buildings that help tell the story of life in historic New Bern, including the Dixon House, Stanly House, and the Hay House. Tryon Palace features 16 acres of gardens and is the reconstructed colonial capitol of NC. Today, the Palace lives on as a testament to history, community and rebirth.

We will stop for an early lunch.  All attractions and lunch are included. This is a moderate walking tour and some sites include stairs. Gratuity for driver is not included (recommended: $2 - $3 per person).  We need 25 people for this trip to take place.

Date: Sat, Feb 29          (316000-01)
Fee: $100 at time of registration.

Life Transitions

Life is full of changes and moving from a home that you have lived in for years can be a daunting experience.  In most cases you will be moving to a smaller home and will need to determine what to keep and what to give away/sell.  You will need to consider how to best orchestrate the process – do you put your house on the market first or do you find your new home first? This session will help you figure out the best way to make the transition and get your house ready to go on the market. Min: 8/ Max: 30

Coffee & Pastry with the Author

Slavery and Class in the American South: A Generation of Slave Narrative Testimony, 1840-1865
Have a cup of coffee with author, William “Bill” Andrews, as he explains how social status and class developed among the enslaved in the first half of the nineteenth century. These distinctions played key roles in the lives and liberation of celebrated fugitives like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs. Andrews explains how social class cut two ways - separating upper and lower strata of slaves to their enslavers’ advantage, but at other times convincing privileged slaves that they deserved complete freedom. There will be an opportunity to purchase the book and have it autographed. Min: 5/Max: 25
