Help Kittens AND Help Local Shelters

Kitten season is upon us! During this season, shelters are often overwhelmed and do not have adequate staffing and other resources to care for so many kittens. This is especially true during COVID-19! Check out our web page to see how you can help kittens AND local shelters during kitten season.

Pet Food Assistance

Pet Food Assistance During COVID-19

We are proud to announce our new Pet Food Assistance Program. This program was created to assist Orange County residents who have lost income and are in need of pet food during the COVID-19 pandemic.
By visiting www.orangecountync.gov/2400/Pet-Food-Assistance-During-COVID-19, Orange County residents may fill out a form to apply for pet food assistance. Those in need of assistance may also call 919-932-4965. While OCAS will work to help as many residents as possible, it is important to note that pet food will only be distributed to Orange County residents as long as it is available. There are other possible resources for pet food assistance listed on the aforementioned web page, including emergency relief resources for those in need of food for horses and other farm animals.
We need your help to stock the Pet Food Assistance Pantry! You may send donations from our Amazon Wish List: https://a.co/jjrjAWU. In-person donation drop-offs at the Animal Services Center have temporarily been suspended due to safety concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we are able to accept donations via delivery from companies such as www.amazon.com and www.chewy.com. Any donations may be shipped to the Animal Services Center at 1601 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

If you need to rehome a pet and want to avoid bringing your pet to a shelter, Rehome O.C. may be an option for you! It's an online pet adoption community focused on helping pet owners in Orange and Chatham counties, North Carolina, rehome their pets. The goal is to connect pet owners with potential adopters, and get pets adopted....all while keeping pets out of shelters!

*Please note that this service is not affiliated with Orange County Animal Services. We just want to let everyone know that it's out there and it may be a viable option for people and pets in need!

Animal Services Facility

Animal Services Operations

To continue to prevent or slow community spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in accordance with the recommendations on social distancing provided by public health officials, Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is currently closed to the public with the exception of appointments made in advance. However, Animal Control and shelter operations staff will be reachable by phone and responding to messages during business hours. Services requiring appointments include but are not limited to:

  • Animal adoptions
  • Animal visitations (Meet & Greets)
  • Animal recoveries
  • Searches for lost animals
  • Animal surrenders

OCAS is currently asking that members of the public delay surrendering animals unless the surrender is extremely urgent or involves an emergency. We are also encouraging the public take advantage of online services such as licensing payments, filing reports and searching for lost or found pets, and browsing available animals. Visit our website to take advantage of these services and other online resources.

To protect our staff and members of the public, we have temporarily suspended all donation drop offs to our facility. However, we can still accept deliveries from online resources (Amazon, Chewy, etc.). Monetary donations are welcomed and greatly appreciated during this time. You can simply mail a check to our facility or donate money online via Orange County’s Community Giving Fund. Please go to this web page for more information:  https://www.orangecountync.gov/364/Donations

To inquire about an appointment or to ask any questions, please call the facility’s main number, 919-942-7387, and follow the prompts that best fit your needs.

For the latest information about COVID-19 and pets, please visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/pets.html.

OCAS would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding as they try to manage and maintain services while protecting staff and members of the public during the current COVID-19 pandemic. For up-to-date information on COVID-19, please visit www.orangecountync.gov/2332/Coronavirus-COVID-19.
