Congratulations

Congratulations to the nine cadets of Class 7 of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Basic Law Enforcement Training academy. The following are now serving with the Orange County Sheriff's Office: Paul Bullock, Pablo Chavez, Tavion McCauley, Braxton Ragan, Connor Stough and Desmire Walton. Logan Coats joins the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Nicholas Di Benedetto is now a deputy with the Alamance County Sheriff's Office and David Fuller is with the Durham County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office runs the academy in partnership with Durham Technical Community College; most classes are at the Orange County Campus. Cadets started Jan. 5 and completed a rigorous academic, physical and practical course of study. On June 23, these men received their badges at New Horizon Church in Hillsborough as family members, friends and community leaders looked on with excitement and joy.

A time to celebrate

Many, many, many sincere thanks and appreciation to all who were engaged in the Orange County Emergency Operations Center, working diligently to keep Orange County residents safe and well during the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 30, after 530 days, we had a final briefing and celebratory luncheon at the Eno River Farmer's Market Pavilion.

Because of their dedication and concern, Orange County had low rates of incidences and deaths. Now, we are #1 in the state for vaccinations. Kudos to Orange County staff, State personnel and community volunteers. Key members received certificates of appreciation and challenge coins.

BOCC appointment

Just a reminder that any Democrat residing in District 1 who is interested in being appointed to replace outgoing commissioner Mark Dorosin on the Orange County Board of County Commissioners needs to complete the application by 5 p.m., July 19. Members of the BOCC plan to make the appointment at our Sept. 2 meeting.
