FAQ

When Will We Need a Fourth COVID-19 Vaccine Dose?

Many people have completed their initial COVID-19 vaccine series and have gladly stepped up to take their booster shot. Many are wondering if another booster shot will be needed. The chief executive officer of Pfizer says a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine will be needed to head off another wave of cases. Pfizer has already asked federal regulators to authorize a second COVID-19 booster shot for people 65 years and older. Moderna has also asked the FDA for authorization for a second booster shot for people over the age of 18. At this time the fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose is not authorized.

For moderately or severely immunocompromised people there is different guidance. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), those with a weakened immune system should complete their primary series (which will consist of three doses rather than two) and it is also recommended that if you are 5 years and older, to get a booster.
