During the first full week of April each year, the American Public Health Association (APHA) brings together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week (NPHW) as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our nation's health. The 2022 NPHW theme is “Public Health is Where You Are.”

Is the Second Booster Vaccine Available?

YES! On March 29, 2022, the CDC updated booster dose guidance to expand eligibility for some people to get a second vaccine booster.

Who is eligible for a second booster?

  • Adults 50 and older can get a second booster dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or the Moderna vaccine at least four months after their first booster.
  • Individuals 12 and older who have certain immunocompromising conditions can get a second Pfizer booster at least four months after their first booster.
  • People 18 and older who have certain immunocompromising conditions can get a second Moderna booster at least four months after their first booster.
  • Adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson’s (Janssen) vaccine at least four months ago can get a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Free COVID-19 Testing 

Testing in Hillsborough
Monday through Friday from 7 am to 4 pm
  • Drive thru testing takes place in the parking lot in front of the Dept. of Social Services (DSS) at 113 Mayo St., Hillsborough, NC 27278. 
  • Registration is strongly recommended and may be done online: mako.exchange/scheduler/registration/?location=7087 You may also call (919) 913-8088 to register weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Walk-in are also welcome.
  • Your Booking ID will be valid any day during clinic hours and is reusable.
  • Mako offers only PCR tests.  
Testing in Chapel Hill
Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3pm
Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm 
  • Testing takes place at Southern Human Services Center (SHSC) at 2501 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 in the large conference room, which may be accessed via a side entrance, not the main entrance.
  • Registration may be done online: https://lhi.care/covidtesting or by calling 877-562-4850. Walk-in are also welcome.
  • Optum offers both PCR and rapid tests.

North Carolina COVID-19 Cases


The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) reports 2,633,131 COVID-19 cases, 23,239 deaths and 381 hospitalizations. 62% of North Carolina's population is up to date on their COVID-19 vaccination.

There are currently 26,184 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 124 deaths in Orange County. 76% of Orange County residents are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations.
