Volunteer Coordinator (AmeriCorps position) Application Priority Deadline: July 8, 2019
The Refugee Community Partnership (RCP) is hiring an AmeriCorps member to serve as our Volunteer Coordinator. Applicants do not have to be approved already for the AmeriCorps program. We particularly encourage those who have lived experience with forced migration, and/or those who have knowledge of community organizing and structures of power and oppression.
The Volunteer Coordinator will serve within RCP Bridge Builders Program. In Bridge Builders, RCP families work with their personal navigators to address critical needs--like finding employment or connecting to medical services--and work toward long term goals, like obtaining a GED or going to college. Bridge Builders mobilizes a community’s residents, resources, and opportunities into a protective ecosystem that activates and sustains social mobility and forges powerful relationships of solidarity among neighbors. Bridge Builders works with 400+ RCP members- hailing from Burma, Syria, El Salvador, and the Congo- representing 10+ ethnicities and native languages.
The Volunteer Coordinator leads communications, trainings, and support activities for 200+ Bridge Builder Navigators, and uses creative problem solving to assist RCP members in achieving goals with their Navigators. In partnership with the Program Manager, the Volunteer Coordinator is a key leader in program activities and impact.

Orange County Partnership for Young Children's Traveling Showcase The Orange County Partnership for Young Children was founded in 1993, as the first Smart Start agency in the state, to ensure that all young children arrive at school healthy and ready to succeed. They promote young children’s healthy development and school readiness by planning, implementing and funding a variety of programs that address the critical issues facing young children and their families. Programs concentrate on early childhood education, children’s health, early intervention, parenting education, and family support.
The Young Children’s Art Contest and Exhibit is a countywide program for children aged 6 months to 5 years. This year’s contest was a huge success! Over 200 pieces of art were collected from child care centers in Orange County. The selected art will be displayed throughout the county during the year. Through art activities, the young child develops a healthy personality by creatively expressing his/her own thoughts and ideas. Imagination, self-expression, and independent thinking are important for later success in school and in life.
In July, the artwork will be displayed at the Orange County Sportsplex, 101 Meadowlands Drive, NC.
The 2019 tour schedule can be found here.

Book Review by Susie Wilde Hair Love, written by Matthew A. Cherry and illustrated by Vashti Harrison (Kokila, ages 4-7) Zuri has hair “that has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils and curls every which way.” She’s a princess in funky braids with beads, a superhero when it’s in two puffs, but on a special big day can her loving daddy pull off a perfect look? That big day means the return of her traveling mother who, on return, totally finds the “prettiest supergirl” and her expert daddy shares “hair love” with everyone.
What do you think of your hair? What’s your favorite way to wear it? What is a special day for you? How do you prepare for it?
