Greg and Karen Mack of Mike's Art Truck will be at the library to answer questions and discuss the exhibit.
The OCPL Main Library is currently hosting a 60-piece exhibition of folk art from January 10 through March 14, 2015 in Hillsborough.
“Folk Art from Mike’s Art Truck” is the library’s second exhibition curated by Hillsborough residents Greg and Karen Mack of the virtual gallery Mike’s Art Truck. The show will spotlight two artists, James Dean and Sam Ezell, and will include artwork from a variety of other self-taught artists.
“Pete the Cat: New Paintings by James Dean” will focus on the artist behind the popular children’s book character “Pete the Cat”. A self-taught artist, James Dean painted his cat Pete doing ordinary and extraordinary things long before the iconic blue cat hit the bookshelves. Dean has created eleven new paintings for this show.
“Picture Hillsborough: New Paintings by Sam Ezell” will present new work from this self-taught artist whose hometown is Hillsborough, NC. Ezell has created 15 paintings of local historic buildings and residences that will be seen here for the first time.
Filling out this exhibition will be a selection of work from self-taught artists Ab the Flagman, Julio Balan, Brian Dowdall, Chris Erskine, bailey jack, Ernest Lee, j.d. Sipe, and Willie Willie.
Exhibition artwork will be available for purchase directly through Mike’s Art Truck. Longtime collectors of “outsider art” & friends of many artists, the Macks founded Mike’s Art Truck to promote and sell the work of self-taught living artists. Mike’s Art Truck has no physical gallery location, and the truck is only an imaginary one driven by their cat Mike. Artwork is shown through cooperation with other galleries and businesses, and displayed and sold online at www.mikesarttruck.com.
