Applicants Needed for Orange County
Advisory Boards and Commissions


ORANGE COUNTY, NC (January 13, 2020) – One major way citizens can have a positive impact on the future of Orange County is to volunteer to serve on the various advisory boards and commissions.    
 
Currently there are openings on the following advisory boards and commissions. 
 
Animal Services Hearing Panel Pool –This panel hears appeals concerning violations of the Orange County Code of Ordinances, Chapter 4 (“Animal Control Ordinance”) and also potentially dangerous dog appeals as prescribed by N.C. Gen. Stat. §67-4.1(c).  Pool members conduct fair and impartial hearings for these appeals.  Members receive training in both law and proper procedure prior to participating in a hearing.  Appeals panels will be convened on an as needed basis for hearings.  Currently there are openings on the Animal Services Hearing Panel Pool for one (1) Town of Chapel Hill representative and one (1) Orange County Veterinarian.

Board of Equalization and Review –This board hears appeals from citizens concerning various property tax issues, including valuation and exemption appeals.  The Board of Equalization and Review is charged with ensuring that all taxable property is appraised and assessed according to the standards required by the North Carolina General Statutes.  There are currently four Alternate Positions open. 

Commission for the Environment - This commission advises the Board of Commissioners on matters affecting the environment with particular emphasis on protection.  It educates public and local officials on environmental issues and performs special studies and projects.  It also recommends environmental initiatives and study changes in environmental science and local and federal regulations.  The County Commissioners are currently seeking applicants for One (1) Land Resources position, One (1) Biological Resources, position, One (1) Water Resources position, One (1) Air Quality position, and Two (2) At-Large positions
 
Hillsborough Board of Adjustment – The Board of Commissioners appoints three County representatives to positions on this board.  This board reviews non-residential building projects, variance requests and appeals.  There is currently one (1) position that will be open June 30, 2020 for a resident living in the Hillsborough ETJ.
 
Hillsborough Planning Board – The Orange County Board of Commissioners appoints three (3) County residents living in the Hillsborough Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) to this board.  Applicants to this board should reside in Hillsborough Township.  The board acquires and maintains information in order to understand past trends, prepare and amend the comprehensive plan for development of the area, and prepare and recommend ordinances promoting orderly development.  One In-Town seat is a Liaison from the Hillsborough Board of Adjustment and floats.  There is currently one (1) position that will be open May 31, 2020 for a resident living in the Hillsborough ETJ.
 
Mebane Board of Adjustment - The Orange County Board of Commissioners appoints one citizen to fill the Orange County position on this board. The Mebane Board of Adjustment hears and decides appeals of decisions by the Mebane Zoning Enforcement Officer. It grants special use permits and variances. When no citizen volunteer(s) are appointed, the Board of Adjustment consists of the Town Board.  There is currently one position open. 
 
Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee – This committee helps to maintain the intent of the Residents’ Bill of Rights, promotes community involvement, and provides public education on long-term care issues.  Orange County is currently seeking applicants with nursing home administration background.  There are currently five (5) positions open, three (3) At-Large and two (2) for Nursing Home Administration. 

Orange County Parks and Recreation Council - The Orange County Parks & Recreation Council includes representatives from each of the county’s townships plus its municipalities. The Orange County Parks & Recreation Council consults with and advises the Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation, and the Board of County Commissioners on matters affecting parks planning, development and operation; recreation facilities, policies and programs; and public trails and open space.  There is currently one (1) Cedar Grove Township position open and one (1) for a resident living in the Hillsborough Town Limits.  There will be one (1) Little River Township position open as of 03/31/2020.
