As of now, the Hazardous Household Waste Centers at the Eubanks Road and Walnut Grove Church Road Waste and Recycling Centers can accept ONLY residential hazardous wastes. The reason for this changes is that the updated permits from the NC Department of Environmental Quality prohibit non-residential wastes.  A list of hazardous waste contractors is available from us by emailing: recycling@orangecountync.gov  or you can call the Solid Waste Management offices between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday to inquire.

The recycling program list of accepted materials has changed.  Residents may no longer place shredded paper or aerosol cans in recycling carts.  Empty aerosol cans may be recycled at any of the five staffed Waste and Recycling Centers with scrap metal.  Full (or partly full) aerosol cans may be recycled as hazardous waste at the Eubanks Road and Walnut Grove Church Road Centers.

Shredded paper may be recycled at the upcoming Shred A thons April 25 at Eubanks Road Park & Ride Lot and May 2 at the Home Depot Recycling Site in Hillsborough.  Both events are from 10am- 2pm, 4 box or bag limit.  β€œ Clamshell type plastic packaging can be put in recycling carts if it’s labeled #1 PETE and is clear, clean and empty as shown below:

The Solid Waste β€œFork it Over” Program lends washable stainless steel forks, spoons and knives at no charge to any Orange County resident.  The utensils are available in amounts up to 500 of each item and must be reserved two weeks in advance.  They are loaned separately by type and must be returned washed and cleaned on a sanitary cycle; separated by type.  To reserve: email: recycling@orangecountync.gov.

We continually seek volunteers to work a shift at the Carrboro Farmers Market composting program helping those bringing their compostable food scraps each Saturday.   During winter hours through March 31, shifts are 8:45am to 10:30am and 10:15am to 12:15pm.  Beginning in April 2020; shifts are 6:45am to9:30am and 9:15 am to 12:15 pm (allowing time for set up and break down).  Ideally an individual or group would commit to one shift per month for a period of at least three months.
