Consumer Fraud Alert: COVID-19As the number of people and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic grows, so do the scams associated with it. Scammers use public health emergencies as opportunities for new fraud schemes, and because older adults are at greater risk for serious illness from COVID-19, they may target older populations.
There is currently no FDA-approved vaccine for COVID-19 and although there may be treatments for symptoms, there is no “cure.” However, scammers often use fear-based tactics to convince people that a vaccine or cure is now being offered.
It’s also important to remember that although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health officials may contact you if they believe you may have been exposed to the virus, they will not need to ask you for insurance or financial information.
Read the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) recommendations for Medicare beneficiaries.

Job Seekers:Right now, there are part-time and full-time jobs available. Large retailers and delivery companies – Amazon, CostCo, WalMart, and several grocery and pharmacy chains are hiring people for warehouse, stocking, cashier and delivery positions. Some grocery stores have online shopping applications for people to use; when the list is complete, shoppers arrange the pick up at curbside of the store, or contact a friend or delivery service. They are hiring people to do the in-store shopping and bagging. Some businesses have remote jobs that require using Microsoft Office, Word or Excel. Home health care agencies are seeking people for nursing care and drivers to take people to stores or pharmacies to pick up groceries, medicines. Financial organizations, life and health insurance companies are hiring. Orange County Department On Aging Employment Services can help you be better prepared for your job search. I’m available by telephone/text at 919-616-8778 or email skomives@orangecountync.gov.

Kudos to our Community Partners! We have been partnering with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, specifically the Community Services Division, for food box distribution since 2016. Our partnership has grown during our COVID-19 response to include participation from the Orange County Sheriff’s School Resource Officers and the Hillsborough Police Department to distribute over 250 boxes to low-income older adults throughout our county.
Our participants have expressed gratitude for the continued support and assistance and always enjoying seeing the faces of local law enforcement. This program truly exemplifies what county agency partnership looks like and how successful we can be when we come together to support one another for our common goal to server and protect our older adult population.
For more information or to apply for this free food program, call or email VC 55+ Administrator, Shenae Mcperson or 919-245-4243.
