While COVID-19 Restrictions are Easing, Mask Mandate and Other Safety Protocols Remain in EffectGovernor Roy Cooper announced lifting some restrictions put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Executive Order 204, which will take effect Friday, March 26 at 5pm and is set to expire on April 30th.
What will be staying the same? The statewide mask mandate remains in effect, and masks are still required in both outdoor and indoor settings. Social distancing is still required even as restrictions for capacity are lifted.
What will be changing? - Low Risk Settings
Can open up to full capacity This includes childcare, camps, outdoor playgrounds, museums, retail and personal care businesses.
- Medium Risk Settings
Can open up to 75% capacity indoors This includes restaurants, breweries, wineries, gyms, pools and amusement parks.
- Higher Risk Settings
Can open up to 50% capacity This includes arenas, conference and reception spaces, movie theaters, gaming and bars.
The decision is based on North Carolina’s COVID-19 key metrics, including a reduction in cases, percent of positive tests, hospitalizations, and number of people visiting the emergency room for COVID-19 symptoms. As vaccine production and distribution is increasing, many North Carolinians are being vaccinated which is contributing to the positive trend in data as well.

Prescription Medications Too Expensive?Medicare’s Extra Help program reduces the price of medications for those who qualify. You must have monthly income below $1610 and savings less than $13,290. For a married couple, income must be less than $2,178 and savings below $26,520. For those who don’t qualify for that program, explore these options: Ask your doctor and pharmacist about alternative medications that are covered on your drug plan at a lower co-pay, such as generics. Search for Manufacturer Discount Programs that cover your medication. Check the current pricing of your medications using a Drug Discount Program. In some cases, retail pricing with coupons are lower than the co-pays on your drug plan. Be aware, however that costs won’t apply to your drug plan’s deductible. Popular options include: www.goodrx.com, www.blinkhealth.com, www.northcarolinadrugcard.com
Make an appointment to meet with a certified volunteer counselor from the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) to discuss your options. We have both in-person appointments and appointments by Zoom available by visiting our website www.orangecountync.gov/ocncshiip or calling 919-245-4274.

NETWORKING BRIEF – A BETTER WAY TO GUIDE PEOPLE TO HELP YOUWhy do you ask other people for help in your job search? Because they know people you don’t. When you do this, what do you expect them to do? At best, the most you should expect is for them to connect, refer or introduce you, or give you names of people they know. When asking for help, many job seekers use their resume to inform other people. The problem with this is your resume has to be translated or interpreted. The reader will ask you “who do you want to meet?” or, “what kind of job are you looking for?” or, “do you have a target list?” or, “what’s the title of the person you want to meet?” This also takes time; many people will say they don’t have time. Here’s a better way. Prepare and use a NETWORKING BRIEF. It’s a one-page guide with the following sections: - Heading: Your Name, cell number, email, and LinkedIn URL.
- Summary: One paragraph describing you, your job title (the one you had, or the one you are seeking). This looks like an abbreviated version of the one in your resume.
- Acceptable & Ideal Jobs: Three very short descriptions including job titles
- How You Can Help: The first word is "Provide". Then add “introductions" or “referrals” or “contacts” or “names” of key people you wish to meet. Next list 8-to-10 names of businesses, companies, organizations, or institutions.
Other sections, such as Job Location, Culture of the Organization, Education, and Highlights/Accomplishments, are optional. We know that NETWORKING BRIEFS are productive. They can be sent before you meet a contact; during your meeting with your contact; or emailed afterwards. Enclosed are links to some good examples, including a template for developing your own. I'm available to help you develop your own NETWORKING BRIEF. Stay strong, be well. Mike Komives, MBAEmployment Specialist919.616.8778skomives@orangecountync.gov
