Don’t Like Your Medicare Plan? You May Be Able to Change
If you missed Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period, or if you have had second thoughts, you may still be able to change. For those with a Part C Medicare Advantage Plan, you can change to another Advantage Plan or return to Original Medicare one time between January 1 and March 31. (Aren’t sure whether you have an Advantage Plan? Check your insurance card. If it says “PPO” or “HMO” anywhere on the card, you do!) Make an appointment to meet with a certified counselor from the NC Department of Insurance. Appointments available by Zoom video chat and in-person at the Seymour and Passmore Centers. Schedule online at www.orangecountync.gov/Medicare or call 919-245-4274.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Orange County NC VITA is a program of OCDOA's Volunteer Connect 55+ that provides FREE federal and NC state income tax preparation to eligible individuals with low-to-moderate income, regardless of age or county of residence.
Due to the Coronavirus, we will offer two virtual services: GetYourRefund.org by Code for America and MyFreeTaxes.com by United Way. Both services will be available in February 2022 and will be available 24/7.
To help more families get the money they’ve earned, the nonprofit Code for America partnered with the IRS VITA program to create a free digital tax prep service called GetYourRefund.org/Cash4NC. Get help filing your income taxes, including filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
EITC is the largest government benefit for workers, and one of the two most effective anti-poverty programs in the United States. To receive your EITC, you must claim it on a tax return. Unfortunately, one in five eligible households aren’t claiming this benefit.
The program is accurate and trustworthy; volunteers are IRS-certified, and each return is double-checked for accuracy. To use the service, visit GetYourRefund.org/Cash4NC.
For more information about eligibility, FAQ's and resources, visit the OCNC VITA website for eligibility, FAQ's and resources to get started today.

What are you worth? Know your value before you interview or explore opportunities. You want to be paid a fair salary. Here's some suggestions that can help you.
A successful Job Search Plan includes knowing what you're worth. And how to respond when asked "What salary are you looking for?" The best answer is your own question: "What have you budgeted (or targeted) for this important position?" More than half the time, the recruiter, a human resource professional or the hiring manager will give a range. Or if they state "we need your number first." say "I want a fair and just salary, and trust that when it's appropriate to discuss, you'll be fair and just."
Having salary information before providing your thoughts puts you in a much better position. If the salary is close enough to the amount you want, you'll be able to say "let's keep talking."
Before an interview, find salary information for positions close to or exactly like the one for which you are applying. Go to web sites such as My Next Move, Glassdoor, SalaryExpert, Salary.com, LinkedIn, Payscale and Indeed. Salaries for most jobs are localized to the Zip code where you work or live.
For help on this or other job search subjects, contact Mike Komives at 919.616.8778 or skomives@orangecountync.gov.
