Stephen "Mike" Komives

Remembering our friend and co-worker, Stephen “Mike” Komives.

We are saddened to share the news of the death of our friend and co-worker, Mike Komives. Mike was a valued member of the OCDoA family.  As our employment specialist, he leaves behind a legacy that will live on for years to come.  Mike, was passionate about helping “mature adults,” as he always referred to many of us, find their “dream job.” The work he has done for senior employment and the hundreds of persons he has helped is irreplaceable.

Friends and peers described Mike as a gentleman and servant leader, an example to be followed. He loved people and made it a point to get to know his clients, co-workers and friends. Mike greeted everyone with a warm, genuine smile and a post-Covid fist bump. Before “getting down to business” he wanted to know how you were doing and took the time to talk about your interests and family.  It was clear that family was very important to Mike, as he enjoyed hearing about our families and sharing news about his own.

Mike had a servant’s heart and inspired others to be better and do better. He led by example, always willing to help, to share knowledge and encourage others. He was the ultimate “networker,” working not for his own benefit, but to benefit those seeking a connection to jobs, resources and needed assistance. Mike put others first, he made a difference. Thank you, Mike, you will be greatly missed by us and by our community!

Mike's Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on May 2, 10:00 a.m. Please remember his family in your thoughts and prayers.

For our mature job seekers, please be patient as we look for someone to take on the employment service duties. For updates and assistance, please contact our Aging Helpline by phone at 919-968-2070 or email agingtransitions@orangecountync.gov.  For resources, please visit www.orangecountync.gov/MatureJobSeekers.

Sincerely, Janice Tyler, OCDoA Director

2022 Income Tax Returns Due April 18

If your only income was Social Security, and you did not have an ACA/Obamacare health plan in 2022, then you do not need to file a Federal or NC State tax return.

If you are required to file a return and owe taxes, but are unable to file by April 18, you can limit the penalties and interest by requesting a 6-month extension and paying an estimate of what you will owe.  Request an extension online at www.irs.gov and www.ncdor.gov (search for “Extension”).

If you are required to file a return and expect a refund, there is no penalty as long as a 2022 return is filed by April 15, 2026.

Our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will continue to provide free assistance to low and moderate income taxpayers in filing their 2022 income tax returns through Saturday April 15.  For information about available services, call 919-245-4242 or visit our website www.orangecountync.gov/VITA.

Older adults living in the Triangle Area...WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

HOPE North Carolina is holding Community Focus Groups in the Triangle Area for older adults to share their thoughts around inclusive communities where people of all abilities and ages experience a sense of belonging. In our efforts to build our first pilot community, we want to hear from the aging community about their general interests in living in a housing community with people living with disability and other families. Your insights and shared lived experiences will support us in understanding the housing needs and preferences.

The focus group will take place in mid-April at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, and all participants will be compensated. If this is something that you would like to be a part of, please fill out the interest form, and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible! We will greatly appreciate your interest in being in conversation with other older folks who have lived experience of wanting to live in an inclusive housing community that will provide a sense of belonging and collective thriving.

Please see the flyer for more information.

If you have any other questions, please email Sharon Son (sson2@unc.edu) or Laura Wells at lauraw@hopenorthcarolina.org.
