September 29 is World Heart Health Day

Smoking is a major cause of Cardiovascular Disease and causes one of every four deaths from Cardiovascular Disease. Smoking can cause these negative health effects:

  • Raise triglycerides (a type of fat in your blood)
  • Lower “good” cholesterol (HDL)
  • Make blood sticky and more likely to clot, which can block blood flow to the heart and brain
  • Damage cells that line the blood vessels
  • Increase the buildup of plaque (fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances) in blood vessels
  • Cause thickening and narrowing of blood vessels

How Can Heart Disease and Stroke Be Prevented?

Heart disease and stroke are major causes of death and disability in the United States. Many people are at high risk for these diseases and don’t know it. The good news is that many risk factors for heart disease and stroke can be prevented or controlled.

It’s important to know your risk for heart disease and stroke and to take action to reduce that risk. A good place to start is with the ABCS of heart health:

  • Aspirin: Aspirin may help reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. But do not take aspirin if you think you are having a stroke. It can make some types of stroke worse. Before taking aspirin, talk to your doctor about whether aspirin is right for you.
  • Blood pressure: Control your blood pressure.
  • Cholesterol: Manage your cholesterol.
  • Smoking: Quit smoking, or don’t start.

NC Firearm Safety image

Keep NC S.A.F.E.

Firearms are the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina. A 2019 study estimated that up to 32% of gun-related deaths and unintentional injuries among youths could’ve been prevented with safe gun storage. Responsible gun ownership starts with proper gun storage, which helps keep our children and other community members safe.

NC S.A.F.E (Secure All Firearms Effectively) is working to raise awareness of gun accidents and the importance of proper storage. Learn more about how to safely store your gun and consider looking into out-of-home gun storage options during times such as when traveling or when children are visiting.

September is Sexual Health Month

The World Health Organization defines sexual health as a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.
