Introducing Pets

Proper Introductions can help set the tone for a successful relationship between pets.

Patience is your best friend after adopting a new pet and slowly introducing that pet into your home. Think of the "3-3-3 Rule." This rule is a guideline for having patience and giving your pet time to adjust:

  • 3 DAYS Three days is probably the minimum amount of time you pet will need to start to decompress. During the first 3 days in a new home, pets often feel overwhelmed, scared, cautious, and uncomfortable. The pet may not have a good appetite, and may try to hide or test the boundaries of the new environment in some way.
  • 3 WEEKSAt the 3-week mark, your pet may be starting to learn the routine of the home. They may start settling in more and be more comfortable, with an understanding that this is probably their permanent home. The pet may be less cautious and start showing more personality.
  • 3 MONTHSThe pet more clearly feels at home and seems to feel comfortable. Your pet begins to build trust and form a true bond. Your pet starts settling into routines and and gains a sense of security with you and the rest of the household.
