Orange County Climate Council

The Orange County Climate Council was created to promote opportunities for collaborating and sharing information on climate issues. Climate Council members include elected officials and environmental advisory board members from the Town of Carrboro, Town of Chapel Hill, Town of Hillsborough, and Orange County as well as important stakeholder organizations like UNC-Chapel Hill, our School districts, Durham Tech Community College, Chamber organizations, OWASA, etc.

Purpose

On May 30, 2024 the Climate Council reconvened with a new charge and purpose. The purpose of the Council is to:

  • exchange information on climate justice, climate change mitigation, resiliency, and adaptation;
  • maintain and update an inventory of climate change initiatives that can be used to advance climate action plan strategies;
  • promote communication among the Towns and the County on future opportunities and collaborative efforts;
  • provide informational updates on the Climate Action Plans of the Towns and County;
  • and share public education and outreach opportunities.

A Brief History

The Orange County Climate Council first began in 2019. It was jointly formed by Orange County, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough as a collaborative effort among the municipal governments, the school systems, UNC Chapel Hill, OWASA and other groups to discuss issues around climate change.
