Adult Care Home and Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee

The Adult Care Home and Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee is a state-mandated and county-appointed committee that serves as an advocate for long term care residents. This advisory committee plays a key role in protecting the rights and safety of residents living in either adult care homes or nursing homes.

Responsibilities

  • Work to maintain the intent of the Residents’ Bill of Rights and ensure quality care for long term care residents.
  • Promote community involvement and cooperation within long term care facilities.
  • Conduct quarterly visits in adult care homes and nursing homes in the county and annually visit all family care homes in the county.
  • Apprise itself of the general condition under which persons are residing in the homes and work for the best interests of the persons in the homes. This may include assisting persons who have grievances with the home and facilitating the resolution of grievances at the local level.
  • Prepare reports as required by the Department of Health and Human Services containing an appraisal of the problems of facilities as well as issues affecting long term care in general.

Regional Ombudsman:  

The regional ombudsman works with advisory committees in several counties in the region. Major responsibilities include:

  • At least quarterly, attend county advisory committee meetings and review reports of member visits to long term care facilities;  
  •  Provide initial and ongoing training and technical assistance to committee members; 
  •  Present information on committee activity to county commissioners and other specified groups;
  • Foster communications between the committee and social services, council on aging and other related groups;
  • Participate in any formal complaint resolution process with committee members and social services;
  • Perform community outreach;
  • Maintain and provide committee contact information and terms of service;
  • Process mileage and activity reports (quarterly); and
  • Forward annual report completed by chair to appropriate groups (county commissioners, social services director, state ombudsman, etc.)
