Green Catering List

The following list of restaurants and catering businesses observe sustainable practices. The sustainable practices used to select these businesses were the following:

  • food waste reduction (e.g., composting)
  • sourcing locally and sustainably (e.g., buying from local farmers)
  • eco-friendly tableware (e.g., providing reusable serving trays)
  • meatless options

Helpful hint: When you place your order with any restaurant or catering business, let them know you are hosting a green event and ask for reusable or compostable tableware (plates, utensils, napkins, etc.)

Here are a few tips to make your next catered event green:

  • Buy locally or sustainably made products. Farmers’ markets are a great source of locally sourced foods.
  • Compost your leftovers. You can drop off your compost at a variety of locations. Orange County has Food Waste Drop-Off sites. Farmers’ Markets in the Towns of Hillsborough, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro offer composting services during the Saturday markets. The Carolina Community Garden and the UNC Edible Campus main garden on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus also have compost donation bins available for drop-off anytime. If you are interested in composting at home, the County has more information and resources to help you get started.
  • Use stainless steel utensils instead of disposable ones. Borrow stainless steel utensils from the County using the Fork It Over program.
