Currently, groundwater level information is being collected from six bedrock wells located in different bedrock lithologies across Orange County. This network of wells is now known as Orange Well Net. Following the completion of several tasks to evaluate and secure existing out-of-use former water supply wells, the collection of groundwater level data from these wells began in late March 2010. The use of existing wells was undertaken as a lower cost alternative to drilling new wells.
Groundwater levels are being collected automatically once an hour from each of the wells. This information is periodically downloaded from the wells, and the resulting data is made available to the public on the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources web page. A link to this web page is provided on the Groundwater Observation Wells page. Additional information concerning the rationale behind the development of Orange Well Net is provided on the Background Information page.
