Several Orange County Departments are hosting special events in February to celebrate Black History Month, culminating with the Pauli Murray Awards on Feb. 25.

The Department on Aging is hosting a special screening of the acclaimed film Till (2022) at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Seymour Center Theater (2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill). This powerful movie depicts the true story of a mother’s tireless fight for justice after the brutal murder of her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till. Seating is limited. Light refreshments served.

The Library will host a book club discussion on The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride at the Main Library in Hillsborough (137 W. Margaret Lane) on Tuesday, Feb. 6, beginning at noon. Staff will host a facilitated discussion about a book that follows a Black community in the 1930s trying to save a young male from unjust institutionalization. Light lunch served.

The Office of Equity & Inclusion will host Hershey’s and Hot Beverage on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Orange County Sportsplex (101 Meadowlands Drive, Hillsborough). Join us from 10-11:30 a.m. for a sweet treat and a cozy hot beverage just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The 34th annual Pauli Murray Awards will be held Sunday, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m. at the Donna S. Baker Meeting Room in the Whitted Building (300 W. Tryon Street, Hillsborough). The awards recognize local Orange County residents who exude many of the qualities that the late Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray dedicated her life advocating for, such as human rights, equality, and leadership. Refreshments and live entertainment will be included.
