The Orange County Department on Aging Project EngAGE LGBTQ+ Senior Resource Team invites the public to attend a presentation and discussion on The Biology of Sexual Orientation, on March 5.
At least three major biological mechanisms contribute to sexual orientation: genetic, immunological, and epigenetic factors. These mechanisms operate during fetal development, primarily affecting the hypothalamus through variations in exposure to sex hormones at different stages. As a result, sexual orientation is established prenatally in the brain, with little evidence suggesting that postnatal environmental or social factors alter it. While sexual orientation is expressed within a cultural context, research indicates that it is not a matter of choice. Rather, individuals choose how to express and navigate the orientation they are born with.
Join our expert, Dr. David DeMarini, as we explore how genetics and prenatal hormones influence sexual orientation. Together we will engage in conversations that foster acceptance, respect, and a deeper appreciation of human diversity.
This free event will take place on Wed, Mar 5, from 5:30 – 8 pm, at the Seymour Center, located at 2551 Homestead Rd, Chapel Hill.
Hor d’oeuvres will be served at 5:30 pm with the program beginning at 6 pm.
