[ARCHIVED] Celebration for completion of sewer project at Historic Rogers Road Neighborhood

The community is invited to an event at 6 p.m. Monday, June 3, to celebrate the completion of 3.5 miles of sewer service for the Historic Rogers Road Neighborhood. The event will take place at the RENA Community Center, 101 Edgar Road.

The June 3 celebration will be led by Reverend Robert Campbell, president of the Rogers Eubanks Neighborhood Association and a deacon at Faith Tabernacle Oasis of Love Church. Local leaders will include Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger, Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle, and Orange County Board of Commissioners Chair Penny Rich.

The Rogers Road-Eubanks Road Neighborhood, a community that straddles Chapel Hill and Carrboro, housed the Orange County landfill for more than 40 years. Responding to advocates for environmental justice, Orange County closed the landfill in 2013. Residents have worked with community partners for many years on plans for sewer infrastructure and to create a master plan for their area.

A collaborative effort among Orange County and the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro helped to fund both the sewer service and establish a community center for the neighborhood.

Progress toward this goal was made in November 2014 when the Rogers Road Community Center opened. Sewer construction began in June 2017 and will be completed in June.

In another effort to implement a neighborhood plan (Rogers Road: Mapping Our Community’s Future), the Chapel Hill Town Council has adopted updated zoning standards for the community. These include provisions to provide more opportunities for home-based businesses and to allow duplexes and triplexes to promote affordable housing, as well as efforts to protect views along Rogers Road. The Carrboro Board of Aldermen is currently considering a similar ordinance.

On June 3, the public is invited to join in the celebration!
