Orange County, the State of North Carolina and the City of Mebane announced Thursday, Sept. 12, the successful recruitment of Medline. The Board officially approved Orange County’s local performance-based incentive offer to Medline in a special Public Hearing on Sept. 10.

“We’re fortunate that Medline chose Orange County and North Carolina for their next business expansion,” said North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Tony Copeland in a ceremony at the Whitted Building. “These things don’t happen by accident. County commissioners, mayors and legislators have to spend a lot of capital to invest in education and infrastructure."

Headquartered in Northfield, Ill., Medline is a privately held healthcare business that manufactures and distributes more than 550,000 medical supplies to healthcare providers across the continuum of care, such as hospitals, surgical centers, physicians, critical care clinics, extended care facilities, pharmacies and EMS first responder agencies. Following a competitive site search across central North Carolina and surrounding states, Medline selected a property located within Orange County’s designated Buckhorn Economic Development District along West Ten Road, with plans to establish a regional distribution center.

Over the next five years, the company will invest an estimated $65.3 million to build a state-of-the-art 1.2 million square foot distribution center that will be automated with an intelligent robotic inventory control system and have an extensive array of solar panels installed on the roof. The building will be built to energy efficient LEED standards that meet the guidance of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The facility will initially create 250 new full-time jobs that will provide health, educational and retirement benefits. At full capacity by year 10 and thereafter, Medline anticipates the new Orange County operation will boast as many as 600 jobs.

They will add to our excellent quality of life.”

The State of North Carolina, to include Governor Roy Cooper’s office, the Department of Commerce and Secretary Copeland and the Department of Transportation, were key partners in attracting Medline Industries to Orange County. The N.C. Community Colleges System will provide technical training assistance.

In addition, the City of Mebane partnered with Orange County in this successful recruitment as part of the county’s overall vision to develop the Buckhorn Economic Development District.

“We are grateful for the support of the many partners that helped in this successful recruitment,” said Orange County Manager Bonnie Hammersley. “On behalf of Orange County’s residents, I wish to thank the company for this exciting new development.”
