Orange County 4-H has announced an exciting new partnership with Apple to expand access to technology and training for young people in Orange County, offering students hands-on experiences that foster skills in coding, design, and digital communication. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Apple and 4-H to bring technology resources to youth nationwide, underscoring a shared commitment to equip the next generation with tools for innovation and problem-solving.
As the largest youth development organization in the United States, 4-H reaches more than 6 million young people annually, empowering them through programs rooted in land-grant university partnerships. The Orange County 4-H initiative, in collaboration with North Carolina 4-H, represents the latest step in this technology-driven education program, initially launched in Ohio. Through Apple’s generous contribution of iPads, MacBooks, Apple TV, and Apple Pencils, Orange County 4-H aims to integrate coding and creative technology into its STEM-focused programs, available to K-12 youth across the region.
"Apple’s mission to educate youth on coding and digital skills aligns perfectly with 4-H’s hands-on learning approach. Together, we are giving Orange County’s young people access to resources and experiences designed to ‘find their spark’ and develop their skills to meet the challenges of tomorrow," said Jonathan Smith, Orange County 4-H Instructor and County Extension Director.
In September, Orange County 4-H professionals, including 4-H Agent Jonathon Smith and 4-H Program Assistant Kathleen Rogers, participated in Apple’s in-depth training program, which covered the basics of graphic design, coding, app development, digital audio with GarageBand, and presentation tools such as Keynote. The training equipped the instructors to deliver impactful computer science programs, from elementary-level activities to more advanced team-based app development initiatives for middle and high school students.
Highlights of the Program Will Include:
STEM Science Nights: Orange County 4-H will host interactive events at local schools, where students can explore activities like digital pop art creation using iPads and Apple Pencils.
Three-Part Coding Series: Engaging youth in a multi-session learning journey that progresses from introductory coding to team-based app development projects.
Summer Coding Camps: Launching in summer 2025, these annual camps will immerse students in coding and app-building workshops, supported by guest speakers from leading technology companies.
Career Readiness Sessions: 4-H will seek to partner with tech industry professionals to expose youth to career paths, skills in demand, and real-world applications of the digital skills taught by 4-H and Apple.
Enrollment in 4-H is free, making this unique opportunity accessible to all Orange County students who wish to participate. With more than 300 members and growing, Orange County 4-H continues to welcome new participants ages 5-18 eager to engage in innovative learning experiences.
