[ARCHIVED] Make Your House Easy to Spot in an Emergency

ADDRESSING web

In an emergency, seconds matter. That’s why Orange County Emergency Services is urging all residents to ensure their home address is clearly visible and easy to locate from the road.

Proper address signage can save lives by allowing emergency responders — including paramedics, firefighters, and police — to reach you as quickly as possible when every moment counts.

Residents are encouraged to follow these simple guidelines to make their addresses visible and accessible:

Use large, clear numbers: House numbers should be at least 4 inches tall with high-contrast lettering.

Install two-sided signs: Numbers should be visible from both directions of travel.

Choose reflective materials: A reflective sign ensures your address can be seen in both daylight and darkness.

Place the sign properly: If your home is within 75 feet of the road, place numbers on the house near the street. If your home is more than 75 feet from the road, install a sign at the entrance to your driveway.

“Address visibility is a critical part of our response strategy,” said Kirby Saunders, Orange County Emergency Services Director. “Whether it’s a medical emergency, fire, or police call, our teams rely on visible address signage to locate residents quickly and safely.”

Residents may purchase signs online or through hardware retailers. Additionally, some local fire departments offer address signs for sale as part of community safety initiatives.
