Orange County to host Libraries, Literature and LGBTQ Communities program
The Orange County Department on Aging and the Project EngAGE LGBTQ+ Senior Resource Team invite the public to attend an enlightening program exploring the powerful role libraries have played in the lives of LGBTQ individuals and communities on February 11.
Join us for Libraries in the Lives of LGBTQ People, presented by Dr. Joseph Winberry, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science.
Libraries have long been more than repositories of books—they have served as safe havens, information hubs, and catalysts for social change. For LGBTQ people, libraries have often provided access to affirming literature, resources for self-discovery, and spaces for community connection during times when acceptance was scarce. From the early days of the gay rights movement to modern advocacy, libraries have stood at the intersection of education and civil rights.
Program Highlights:
• Historical overview of importance of the librarian profession for LGBTQ individuals
• The role of libraries in advancing civil rights and social justice
• How libraries continue to support LGBTQ communities today
Dr. Winberry will share insights into how libraries have empowered LGBTQ people through access to information, representation in literature, and community programming—helping to shape a more inclusive society.
This FREE event will take place on Wed, Feb 11 from 4 – 5:30 pm , at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Rd, Chapel Hill.
Please register by Mon, Feb 9 at 919-968-2070.
