[ARCHIVED] Statement from BOCC regarding potential changes to firearm regulations

Manager Bonnie Hammersley presents to the baord of commissioners photo

Statement from Board of County Commissioners regarding potential changes to firearm regulations

After receiving a petition from many concerned residents in June regarding public safety and noise concerns, the Orange County Board of Commissioners asked the county attorney to provide information about the legal framework related to regulating discharge of firearms in dense neighborhoods. This information will be presented to the BOCC at its Sept. 10 work session (see below for links to agenda item and map showing potential areas of impact).

The Board is not considering changes related to the discharge of firearms at its Sept. 3 meeting.

Residents may attend the Sept. 10 work session to hear the county attorney’s report, but public comments are not taken at work sessions. This meeting is scheduled for the Southern Human Services Center (2501 Homestead Rd., Chapel Hill) at 7 p.m.

If the Board of Commissioners decides to pursue changes, within the allowable legal framework, to the discharge of firearms, the public will be invited to provide input as changes are considered by the Board. Agendas are posted several days in advance of each meeting on the Orange County Website: www.orangecountync.gov/1707/BOCC-Agendas.
