Hillsborough Second Circulator Kickoff Event Scheduled
The news media and members of the public are invited to attend the Hillsborough Second Circulator Kickoff on Tuesday, June 24, at 10 a.m. The event will be held at 113 Mayo Street, Hillsborough, and will introduce key improvements to Orange County’s local bus service. Attendees will have an opportunity to ride Orange County’s all-electric buses, the first of their kind in North Carolina.
Enhancing Local Mobility
Following a comprehensive operational analysis of the existing Hillsborough Circulator fixed-route bus service, Orange County Transportation Services is implementing a series of enhancements aimed at:
- Increasing operational efficiency
- Boosting ridership
- Better serving key destinations, including:
- Government offices
- Grocery stores
- Residential neighborhoods
Key Service Enhancements
- Route Expansion:
The current single circulator route will be split into two distinct fixed routes. This change will reduce overall travel times and offer better route connectivity. - Improved Frequency:
Bus frequency will increase from every 60 minutes to every 45 minutes, allowing for more convenient access. - New Stops for Public Access:
A new stop will directly serve the Orange County Health Department and the Whitted Building at 300 W. Tryon Street, Hillsborough, enhancing access to essential health and administrative services. - New Transfer Hub:
The Orange County Main Library, located at 137 W. Margaret Lane, will serve as a central transfer point, allowing passengers to switch routes with a maximum 15-minute wait time, significantly improving trip flexibility and efficiency. - Sustainable Vehicles:
In alignment with the county’s Climate Action Plan, the two new buses that will be used to transport riders are fully electric Ford E-Transit shuttle vans and include wheelchair configurations. They are the first electric buses of their type to be used for public transportation in North Carolina.
No Additional Cost to Residents
These improvements are being introduced without requiring any new budget appropriations. By optimizing existing resources, Orange County is enhancing transit service quality and accessibility for the community.
Community Engagement Encouraged
Residents are encouraged to attend the June 24 kickoff event to learn more about the enhanced circulator routes and provide feedback.
