2024 Achievements

These numbers represent animals and people served by Orange County Animal Services in 2024

2620 Live Outcomes

These are animals adopted, reclaimed by owners, transferred, or returned to the community. These outcomes resulted in an impressive 91% live release rate for our shelter in 2024.

811 Animals Fostered (533 cats, 275 dogs, 3 rabbits)

Foster homes reduce the number of pets housed at the shelter, provide an ideal setting for socialization, and reduce the risk of infectious disease exposure. In addition to the animals fostered, 604 dogs went on field trips and 100 dogs went on sleepovers as part of our Dog Day Out initiative.

102 Working Barn Cats Rehomed

These community cats are not social & can’t be safely handled or petted like typical house cats. This program gives them a second chance to live happy lives on their own terms. Cats are sterilized and vaccinated before being rehomed.

550 Rabies Vaccinations Administered

These vaccines were administered at low-cost, community clinics. Rabies is a fatal, viral infection and it is a law in North Carolina that dogs, cats, and ferrets older than four months must have a current and valid rabies vaccination.

Our amazing volunteers donated 12,702 hours of their time to help shelter animals.

586 Community Cats Diverted From Shelter

OCAS maintains programs and partners with other organizations to help with access to spay/neuter services and reduce the number of free-roaming cats needing to be rehomed by the shelter.
