This spay/neuter program is NOT for pets like socialized house cats or pet cats that live indoors only part time. This program targets community cats (free-roaming, outdoor cats) that are typically not social (often feral or semi-feral) and live in small groups or in colonies on an Orange County property. They are fearful and not animals that would normally be considered adoptable.
This process will involve a community cat caretaker that can ideally assist with trapping of the cats, and a refundable deposit will be required for traps.
This program is helping to prevent unwanted litters and reduce free-roaming cat overpopulation in our community. Simply removing the cats from an area can be an invitation for more cats to enter that territory, and this older method has proven not to be effective. So, people are frequently caught in a vicious cycle where free-roaming cat populations are not controlled. This program is a humane and proactive approach to free-roaming/community cat issues.
