Tax Liens

North Carolina law requires counties to advertise past-due property taxes each year. Orange County will advertise 2025 tax liens in local newspapers in mid to late March 2026. Property taxes for 2025 become delinquent after January 5, 2026.

If taxes remain unpaid at the time of advertisement, the tax lien may be foreclosed and the property may be sold to satisfy the outstanding tax debt.

Current Tax Lien Information

Until the 2025 liens are advertised in March 2026, Orange County will continue to publish the 2024 tax lien listings on this page. These listings show accounts that were unpaid as of the close of business on March 14, 2025

The 2024 reportable liens include unpaid taxes for properties located in the following municipalities: Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough, and Mebane.

The advertised amounts continue to increase due to interest and collection costs. Any difference between the advertised amount and the final amount due does not waive Orange County’s claim for all interest and fees owed.
