In response to the widespread impacts left by Tropical Storm Chantal, Orange County has launched the Tropical Storm Chantal Giving Fund in collaboration with the towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. This joint initiative is dedicated to supporting local recovery efforts and ensuring aid reaches those most in need across all areas of the county.
Tropical Storm Chantal brought significant challenges to the community—damaged homes, displaced families and disrupted local services. The Giving Fund represents a coordinated effort among county and municipal leaders to address these challenges through equitable and prioritized distribution of resources.
The fund will focus on providing essential resources and services in critical areas, including:
- Emergency housing assistance for displaced families
- Food security and meal distribution programs
- Mental health support and counseling services
- Restoration of public services and infrastructure
- Small business recovery grants
All contributions will directly support these vital recovery efforts, helping Orange County and its towns emerge stronger and more resilient. As of July 14, the fund has collected more than $12,000.

About the Tropical Storm Chantal Giving Fund
The Tropical Storm Chantal Giving Fund is a partnership of Orange County and the towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. It was created to streamline community donations and ensure resources are directed to where they are needed most following Tropical Storm Chantal.
A long-term recovery group is in the early stages of development to support the community’s recovery. The group aims to be a cooperative body made up of representatives from faith-based, nonprofit, government, business and other community organizations. Its purpose is to coordinate resources and services—particularly donated funds and volunteer efforts—to meet the long-term needs of individuals and families who have been affected.
The Tropical Storm Chantal Giving Fund is one of many ways to financially support the community’s recovery. Residents who wish to donate directly to trusted local nonprofits are encouraged to do so.
