Board of Elections

The Orange County Board of Elections is comprised of five dedicated members who are entrusted with administering fair, secure, and accessible elections for all county residents. In accordance with North Carolina law, each county board includes four members appointed by the State Board of Elections, two from each major political party, and a chair appointed by the State Auditor. All members are registered voters of Orange County, serve two‑year terms, and take a legally mandated oath committing to uphold both state and federal constitutions.

Together, our board members work to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process. Their responsibilities include establishing and overseeing polling places, appointing election officials; overseeing absentee and provisional ballot tabulation; conducting recounts and hearings on election disputes; certifying results; and investigating irregularities, reporting any violations to the State Board of Elections. While the day-to-day administration is managed by the county’s professional elections staff, the board provides essential policy guidance and oversight. Their commitment upholds public trust in the democratic process at the local level.

For its regular meetings, the Board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 5 PM to conduct business, unless rescheduled or canceled. The Board meets more frequently before and after elections to consider absentee ballot applications and other matters. All meetings are open to the public.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide the citizens of Orange County with fair, efficient, convenient, and accurate elections within the guidelines of State and Federal Election Laws.

In addition to preparing for and conducting all elections within Orange County, the Orange County Board of Elections is responsible for processing and maintaining all Orange County voter registration records.
