Floods

About Flooding

Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto normally dry land, typically caused by a lot of rain. Flooding can last days, weeks, or longer.

Floding can cause power outages, make roads impassable, and can cause damage to buildings.

Even a little flooding can be dangerous. One foot of moving water is enough to sweep a vehicle away.

Flood vs. Flash Flood

A flash flood is a type of flooding that occurs very rapidly. A flash flood can happen within minutes to hours. Flash floods can be caused by large events like intense rain or dam failure.

Know Your Flood Risk

View the Orange County Flood Maps to determine the risk of flooding in your area. Identify the roads that often flood near you and find alternative routes in the event the road becomes flooded.

Purchase Flood Insurance

Homeowner's insurance does not cover flooding. It is important to purchase or renew your flood insurance policy to ensure you are covered in the event of a flooding event. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) helps provide flood insurance to residents and businesses.

Make a Plan

Have a plan for your family to protect yourself from floods. Keep important documents in a waterproof container and know your evacuation routes.

Stay Alert

Sign up for OC Alerts to be notified of extreme weather and other emergencies near you. Consider purchasing a NOAA weather radio to hear emergency alerts if the power is out.
