What is a well-child checkup?

A well-child checkup is a visit with a health care provider when your child is not sick. This visit includes a complete health history and physical exam, which may include:

  • Height and weight measurements
  • Age-appropriate developmental screening
  • Vision screening
  • Hearing screening
  • Blood pressure check (age 3 and older)
  • Vital signs
  • Nutrition assessment
  • Vaccinations
  • Lab tests such as urinalysis, sickle cell, TB skin test, or lead screening

These visits are also a great time to ask questions about your child’s health.

When should my child have a well-child checkup?
It is recommended that your child visit their primary care provider for a well-child checkup at the following ages:

  • 2 weeks
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 or 15 months
  • 12 months
  • 18 months

Remember to bring your child’s vaccination record to each appointment.
